Will We Ever Learn to Be?

Will We Ever Learn to Be?

Denounce or admit

That the picture might be true,

The birth of us all

In a galaxy so blue.

Where the stars burn and ponder

On the wisdom of it all

And the sun shines down

And holds us all in thrall.

In a pre-atomic world

Where cavemen sit and stare

And ask the same questions

Of which we are aware.

This malleable universe

Where planets come and go.

Do we ever reach maturity?

Or build on what we know?

Will we ever learn to be?

Just be and not to care?

For past or future

We're neither here nor there.

Philosophers and priests,

Laymen and the young

Reach a certain point

And find they've just begun.

For the beginning was so small,

It's difficult to see

And the end is oh so distant

That what will be will be.

The Moth

The Moth

Sanguine girl of Empires lost sitting near a flame,

Edge a little closer now and whisper God your name.

Persian tales of sudden love beat within her heart,

Like wildfire stories spread from noon, sunset, ‘till dark.

To keep alive Eastern myths is what we all applaud,

But will she dare dissolve into the flame to find her sword?

She longs to fight for Union on the battlefield of bliss,

To meet her God all alone and greet Him with a kiss.

Her mind is free of bitterness, her soul a source of love

And wine is a reminder, but is sacrament enough?

For she is a true, true, Lover, journeying since birth,

A molten, desperate traveller ransoming her worth.

A chrysalis so fragile, a moth that knows no fear

Longing for the light of God, drawing ever near.

Now she's on her knees again, a smile on her lips

Her journey but a memory, a universal trip.

Into the warmth of spirit now, deep and bright and pure,

She's reached her final resting place in God she is assured.

Amnesty

Amnesty

The aura breaks down

Then reassembles

A rainbow projection.

You stutter then grow in confidence

As the sun startles

Then climbs.

You long to speak of encounters

In Moorish alleyways

And deserted abbeys.

The fog is enticing

Yet a waste

Mercy never far away.

Reach out - pick that flower

Release the inmates of your mind

Amnesty for all.

The Sufis

The Sufis

Our span exceeds

But ends in smoke

Soon to reappear;

Upon the shore

Of memories

Distant yet so near.

The wool is coarse

As dreams give way

To energy and warmth;

The battlefield is

Closer now

The Sufis striding forth.

Not to fight

But melt into

A world no longer theirs;

To lie in wait

While dreams dictate

It's God alone who cares

Their cloaks afire

Bending time

Calling to the One;

To send His Gift

Upon the earth

As when we all were young.

While we watch

The mind so close

For God He lingers there;

Reflecting all reality

With a Love

So bold and rare.

The Saints give form

To mystery

And call us all to Him;

Singing to the rocks and clouds

And children free from sin.

Making all we know anew

With a wish and with a prayer;

So Christ may come

Amongst us now

And make our hearts aware.

The Candle Burns

The Candle Burns

Seraphic speech

And overwhelming dreams,

Solemn requests

Revolving

To your knees.

Plainsong echoes

The prayer wheel turns

Clergy weep

The candle burns.

An instrument of peace

Glides and plays his tune

Houri expound

Flowers bloom.

Sustenance in sutras

People on the Way.

Searching for the meanings

Of what God will say today.

The Master

The Master

What it is to be immune

To the struggle as it turns

With every brand new orbit

The soul it grows and learns.

I meet him in the clouds

And on a sandy beach

I sit with my old master

Who's always there to teach.

To teach me of the mind

And the body which needs air

Of consciousness and solitude

And God who truly cares.

 He exists within a particle

And on a gentle breeze

The lessons which emerge

Bring me to my knees.

Where I can offer thanks

For another night survived

And a day which stretches onwards

In this special, precious life.

He looks the same as ever

Spiritually alert

Eyes which hold the ocean

And shatter so much hurt.

So when he is no longer

I won't feel so alone

I'll think of us together

In his tiny, humble home.

When he's become a glowing sun

And so shines down on me

I'll be that grain of desert sand

That once was all at sea.

Like Bryony in Appearance

Like Bryony in Appearance

Disarmingly you meander

Your riposte is ripe

And the vivid scene

You enhance

So alluring.

Some love is wintergreen

Like bryony in appearance;

But come solstice or equinox

Your cabriolet awaits

Wineglass brimming.

The dawn chorus enters your heart

And the incipient sunrise

Washes over you

Making certain promises;

Edicts for others to keep

As the seasons fade into one.

Waking Up

Waking Up

I find comfort in the calm

Before and after the storm.

I'm walking into your heart,

Through an ever open door.

I'm waking myself up,

Climbing into Now,

Challenging illusion,

Crawling on the bough.

I'm cherishing the moment

For that is all there is.

I'm flourishing inside,

I've weighed up all the risks.

I'm talking to my soul,

Falling to my knees.

Abandoning the windy path

Through a multitude of trees.

I'm shadowing ebullience,

Until the sun has gone to bed,

Taking hold of my emotions

And the dictates of my head.

Abigail

Abigail

Abigail, the freak waves soar,

A wind, a dream, a sail.

From your Buddha's heart

A desperate plea,

To English shores

Via antique sea

Only drowning in your spell.

Your hennaed hair,

Moroccan flair,

Your simple joie de vivre.

The moon may wax and wane,

But constant is the pain,

Of separation

From my beloved still.

Our union of love will be guided not abated,

By the constellations we've created.

As for mystics,

Our own yardsticks,

Will thresh the wheat from the chaff.

Civilisations come and cultures go,

Abi, draw a line in God's sand.

A simple ceremony,

The breeze in harmony,

We've struggled, humble,

Hand in hand.

Hidden Cache

Hidden Cache

Expounding theories

In a worn out way,

My metaphysic threshold

Is all but in decay.

Proselytise then abandon,

Composer of a truth.

It's beyond my comprehension

You play so fast and loose.

You've made me question everything

To dig so deep and dark.

There's a cache hidden somewhere

Where's the fire?

Where's the spark?

The borderland beckons

What better compromise?

But the balladry of angels

Is what guides me to the light.

I'll never stop searching

I want to be set free

And I have the strangest feeling

Someone's watching over me.
